Eat Less Red Meat

A large study conducted at Harvard has found that eating chicken or turkey instead of beef or lamb can cut women's heart disease risk. Researchers say this probably works for men too. Red meat contains baddies like heme iron and saturated fat, whereas these better sources of protein (ie poultry, nuts, fish and low-fat dairy) contain goodies such as fatty acids and polyunsaturated fats, which may protect against heart disease.

40 Weeks Key for Babies

Pregnant women take note:

If you have a choice, go for the full 40 weeks. Even being delivered one week early can make a difference in a child's chances of needing special education at school age, recent research suggests.

Babies born at a full 40 weeks have fewer learning difficulties later in life than babies born prematurely or event babies born at 37 to 39 weeks, according to a new study in UK. In the study, the children who required special educational help either had a learning difficulty such dyslexia or autism, or a physical difficulty such as deafness or poor vision. The increased risk from 40 to 39 weeks is small for an individual child. But 1/3 of all children are born in the early weeks (37-39 weeks).

Many women do not have any control when their babies are born. And even for those who do, there are so many factors that go into the best timing of a child's birth. This new finding is just one new piece of information that should be taken into account.

Easing carrier fatigue - start off by being realistic about where you are and that recommends seeking new roles and keeping a work diary if you're not sure what motivates you. Or take extended time off..

Fashion Alert: High Heels A Health Hazard

How does wearing high heels damage your body?
1) Bunions: Wearing tight fitted shoes may cause a bony growth on the joint at the base of the big toe.
2) Calf muscle: High heels cause the calf muscle to contract as it is forced to adjust to the irregular angle. In the long term this can cause the muscle to shorten and tighten.
3) Achilles Tendon: The higher heels you chose, the shorter your tendon becomes. This in turn will create heel pain as the front of the foot moves downwards in relation to the heel your Achilles tendon tightens up.
4) Poor Posture: Holding a good posture is rare when perched in vertiginous heels. The heels push the center mass of the body forward causing the hips and the spine to move out of their alignment. Bad posture is also responsible for lower back pain.
5) Knobbly Knees: Walking in high heels alters the posture of walking as it places an excess of force and mass onto the inside of the knee.
6) Bad Balance: You are at a greater risk of falling over and therefore damaging your ankle (sprain or break) as high heels create bad balance.
7) Metatarsalgia: High heels force body weight to be redistributed. Wear over long periods can lead to joint pain in the ball of the foot, known as metatarsalgia.

Minimizing the impact:
1) Keep the height of your heel to 4 cm or below.
2) Variation is important. If you wear 10 cm heels one day, try no heel or a very low one on the next.
3) Avoid backless heels. The lack of support forces you to claw you toes as you walk.
4) Perform a series of calf stretches at the end of the day to keep your feet supple and counteract the shortening calf muscle effect caused by heels.
5) Choose a heel with a strap over the instep as this will hold the foot in a secure position and stop it from sliding forward.

Staying Fit Can Train Your Brain

It's a brain-a-thon. Running can keep your body fit but a new study says exercise also boost brain health.

Being active throughout your life might help you think straight as you age. Women who were more active or were active at each age (teen years, at age 30, at age 50 and after age 65) had lower rates of cognitive impaired than those who were inactive. Result of a Toronto study (comparing mental functioning and exercising) indicated that fitness does seem to affect brain health.

There's Hope for Underachievers

Do good grades in college mean huge success later in life?

Good news, C students - there's no proof. What Kurt Vonnegut, Bill Gates, Woody Allen and Colin Powell all have in common. It's a high degree of motivation, formed by a conscious decision. That's what these successful people had.

In 1984, a team of researches in the US combed through 35 independent studies and found very little, if any, correlation between CPA and 'income, job satisfaction and effectiveness'.

Do You Dilly-Dally Daily?

The internet is a beehive of distractions.

Q: Are you among the procrastination-prone people?
A: Yes (and it's a BIG problem), if you get to a point where your use of the internet is causing you to miss deadlines!

OK guys time to binge. To cut down on dilly dallying, researches recommend 'batching' your leisure browsing into one 20-minute binge every hour or two.

Measure Your Body Mass Index (BMI)

Measuring BMI tells you whether you are normal, overweight or obese. BMI over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 is considered obese.

Doctors nowadays also measure waist circumference, which reveals whether the fat is stored around the belly. For women, a waist that measures more than 35 inches (88 cm) is considered quite risky. For men, 40 inches (102 cm) is bad.

Pear-shaped people tend to have less visceral (bad) fat than apple-shaped people. So, wait no more. Let's walk or jog regularly as it will helps reduce belly fat.
